From 25 To Scratch: What The Data Shows
Happy Monday,
It's been a while.
Golf Insider went quiet last March while I figured out what came next. Sadly, Google updates and AI meant Golf Insider was no longer viable to run.
The short version: I've been fully focused on Break X Golf — a practice app I've been building with a co-founder to help golfers shoot lower scores.
In 2026, I’m bringing back this newsletter (twice a month), re-branded but still 100% free – it won't be a sales pitch, just practical, data-backed content on shooting lower scores.
If you'd still like to receive it, great. If not, the unsubscribe link is at the bottom — no hard feelings and all the best for your golf in 2026.
Now, onto something I think you'll find useful...
This Week:
Article – Golf stats: What changes from 25 to scratch?
Practice challenge – Improve your driving accuracy
Quick tip – Making swing changes
Short video – How to actually get better at golf
🏌️♂️ Rapid-Fire Takeaways:
✅ Greens in regulation is the defining stat — a 38-point gap separates scratch (56.8%) from 25 handicappers (18.7%), making it the strongest predictor of handicap.
✅ The "short and accurate" golfer is a myth at elite levels — 89.5% of scratch golfer rounds come from "bombers," and only 10.4% are short hitters finding fairways.
✅ You don't need 300 yards to reach scratch — but you'll struggle averaging less than 235 yards off the tee (the 10th percentile for scratch golfers).
✅ Even scratch golfers only get up and down 50% of the time — short game is hard for everyone, so realistic expectations matter more than chasing perfection.
✅ Putts per round undersells putting skill — the 5.7 putt difference hides the fact that scratch golfers are draining more mid-range putts from hitting greens, not just tapping in scrambles.
⛳️ A Challenge For Your Next Round:
🔷 High-Handicapper (15+): Forget the flag entirely. On every approach shot, pick the safest route to anywhere on the green and commit to it. Track how many greens you hit compared to your normal round.
🔷 Mid-Handicapper (7–15): Note where your approach shots miss (left/right/short/long). Consider how you can change your clubbing and aim to hit more greens without swing changes.
🔷 Low-Handicapper (<7): Track your "bomber + accurate" percentage. How many holes do you hit both a 250+ yard drive AND the fairway? Target 8+ holes per round to match scratch-level driving.
Practice Challenge
I won’t lie, this is a tough challenge, but a great practice game if you have a slice, fade or push. Just flip the scoring if you have a hook or a pull.
